By an INSEAD MBA Alumnus
There’s something magical about an MBA, especially from a school like INSEAD. One year. 60+ nationalities. Intense case discussions. Lifelong friends. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
But here’s the truth they don’t always tell you: It’s not for everyone. And even for those who benefit, it’s not always for the reasons they expected.
If you’re considering applying, let me give you an honest, insider’s perspective, one that goes beyond glossy brochures and LinkedIn success stories. Ask yourself these questions before you dive in.
1. What Do You Really Want Out of It?
At INSEAD, some people came to pivot their careers. Some wanted to move continents. Others wanted to start companies or just take a breather from burnout.
I came in wanting clarity, and left with it. But not everyone did.
The MBA is not a magic 8-ball. It won’t automatically reveal your calling. If you don’t know what you’re searching for, the buffet of options can be overwhelming.
✅ Honest tip: Spend time figuring out your “why” before you spend €100K+ chasing it.
2. Are You Buying Time, Brand, Network, or Transformation?
Let’s break down what you actually get:
- Time: A pause button on your life to explore, grow, and reflect.
- Brand: A global name that gets your résumé read in Singapore, San Francisco, and São Paulo.
- Network: Friends in private equity, large corporates, startups, and consulting, all in one WhatsApp group.
- Transformation: If you’re open to it, the growth can be exponential.
But you don’t get all four unless you go all in. I saw classmates who coasted, bare minimum effort, same job after graduation. Brand? Sure. But transformation? Missed.
✅ Honest tip: If you only want the brand, there are cheaper ways to impress people.
3. Do You Know What It’s Like to Live at 120%?
INSEAD was the most exhilarating, exhausting year of my life. 12 months. No summer break. Recruiting while juggling finance cases, startup pitches, and 2 AM group projects.
I loved it. But I had classmates who hated the pace, the stress, the pressure.
✅ Honest tip: This isn’t a sabbatical. It’s a sprint. Don’t apply if you’re just trying to escape your current job.
4. Would You Still Want This If No One Ever Knew You Did It?
Let’s be real, ego drives a lot of MBA decisions. We love the idea of being “an INSEAD alum” or “a Harvard grad.” It opens doors. It’s impressive. I won’t lie, there are moments when the brand helps.
But if the prestige is your primary driver, pause.
Would you still want this experience, even if it came with no title, no bragging rights, and no automatic clout?
If yes, you’re probably going to get a lot out of it.
✅ Honest tip: The most fulfilled grads I know chased growth, not status.
5. Can You Handle the ROI Math and the Emotional Math?
INSEAD was €90K when I attended. Add living costs, opportunity cost, travel between campuses (Fontainebleau and Singapore!), and you’re staring at a ~€150K+ year.
Was it worth it? Financially – within 2 years, yes. Emotionally – absolutely. But it was a calculated risk.
✅ Honest tip: If the idea of debt keeps you up at night, consider scholarships, employer sponsorships, or part-time MBAs. There’s more than one route.
7. Do You Want to Change Jobs or Change Yourself?
This is the heart of it.
MBA programs offer far more than new careers. They rewire how you think, speak, and solve problems. They build empathy across cultures. They push your boundaries.
But transformation doesn’t come automatically. You have to lean in, get uncomfortable, and question your assumptions.
I didn’t just graduate with a new resume, I left with a new lens on life.
✅ Honest tip: If you’re open to growth, the MBA is more than a credential. It’s a catalyst.
Final Thought: Choose Intentionally, Not Automatically
If you’re asking yourself, “Do I really need an MBA?” – good. That’s the right question.
Don’t apply because you’re bored, burnt out, or following the crowd. Apply because it aligns with a vision you’re building. Apply because you want the journey, not just the stamp.
And if you do choose to go for it, go all in. That’s where the real magic happens.
Still unsure? I get it. I was too. But asking hard questions now is what sets you up for a meaningful answer later. And if you ever need an honest, experienced ear – I’m here.
